American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)

ABEM certifies qualifying physicians who specialize in Emergency Medicine and is a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). This certification is sought and earned by physicians on a voluntary basis. ABEM and other member boards certify only those physicians who meet high educational, professional standing, and examination standards etc.

ABEM has achieved an agreement with the American Board of Internal Medicine to become a co-sponsor in IM Critical Care Medicine, which means that Emergency Medicine residents will have access to training in two-year CCM Internal Medicine-sponsored fellowship programs upon completion of their EM residencies. Following successful completion of the fellowship, they will be eligible for certification in Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine or MCCM.

The qualifying examination is a comprehensive examination conducted by ABEM that covers the breadth of Emergency Medicine. Each examination appointment is approximately 8 hours in length, with approximately 6.5 hours devoted to actual testing time. This is called ABEM Qualifying Exam. ABEM Prep is the perfect primer for excelling at this certifying examination.
